The Athena Spirit Pelvic Floor Exerciser is a device created for treating the common problem of incontinence in women. Incontinence can be caused by a number of factors but commonly happens due to the affects of aging, childbirth and the menopause. In the past, women often kept the problem to themselves, preferring to disguise the problem by using incontinence pads. This was often after trying to follow a rigorous program of kegel exercises.
Kegel exercises were devised by Dr Kegel with the intention that regular exercise would strengthen a weakened pelvic floor. However, he originally intended that the exercises should be done with some kind of resistance device rather than on an empty vagina (imagine trying to strengthen the biceps without using weights) but this fact has been somehow “lost” over the years. Additionally, many women simply lose the motivation to do the required number of pelvic “squeezes” for them to have any kind of beneficial effect, so apathy often sets in and living with incontinence unfortunately becomes a way of life.
Electronic devices such as the Athena Spirit Pelvic Floor Exerciser enable women to complete their kegel exercises in an effortless way by electronically stimulating the pelvic floor muscles, enabling a large number of targeted repetitions to be performed in a short space of time. Many women even find that they are able to use the devices whilst reading or watching TV. Indeed the discreet, cordless feature means that many women choose to use the Athena whilst relaxing.
The Athena Spirit consists of a cordless vaginal probe and a handheld computer-controlled device with a digital readout. The probe is fairly wide compared to other similar devices and this is so the maximum contact area can be maintained within the vagina, thus ensuring that full benefit is obtained from the electrical impulses. There are settings for treating urge, mixed and stress incontinence and the internal computer keeps track of your workouts meaning you can follow your own personal progress.
